This interactive lecture discusses child maltreatment and the EMS practitioner’s role and responsibilities when caring for these patients. EMS practitioners are often the first to recognize the signs and symptoms of child abuse or neglect, and therefore have a crucial and unique opportunity to intervene. The primary concern is for the safety and treatment of the patient.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

  • Discuss the epidemiology of child maltreatment
  • Describe the different forms of child maltreatment
  • Identify a possible victim of child maltreatment
  • Provide an appropriate level of care
  • Interact professionally with caregivers

Practitioners who successfully complete the Maltreatment of the Child (ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education
